Problem Solver: Digital Signage Localization

Objectives:
1)      Add a local branding element to a sign used in 48 different locations
2)      Minimize impact to operational workflow

Customer Problem
A WEGENER customer wished to display a digital sign in 48 different locations using our digital signage solution.  The sign would be complex and use the same content at each location, except for the display of the location name.  The customer’s initial thought was to create a sign with one location name, clone it 47 times, and then change the location name in each sign.

This would be an ongoing operational nightmare to manage, as every small change to the sign (such as changing a price list) would need to be replicated 47 more times in the cloned signs.

WEGENER’s Solution
WEGENER suggested using the keyword feature in Compel 2.  It allows users to select how a sequence of media elements from a specific content directory plays out.  Play-out options include “SHUFFLE”, “SEQUENTIAL”, or “RANDOM”.

When the sign is activated, the sequence for the location name will point to the “/location” directory.  The keyword will perform the requested “SHUFFLE”, “SEQUENTIAL”, or “RANDOM” operation.  In this case the directory at the end-user site contained a single file – enabling it to always display the location name.

It is easy to see how this idea could be used to create, distribute and manage a common sign, but localize elements, such as logos and text crawls.
